Billings, Montana, 1977-1978

Abstract

A few Jewish merchants settled in Billings in 1884, but a community began only after 1900. Congregation Beth Aaron was formed in Billings in 1918. The Jewish population grew and declined mainly with the boom (1950s) and bust (1960's) of the oil business. By 1979, there were approx. 30-40 Jewish families in Billings.

Abstract Rabbi Daniel Goldberger (1924-2007) was a prominent individual in the Denver Jewish community. He married Ida Goldberger (1924- ) in 1947. Daniel Goldberger was born in New York City and received his and Master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1950. Goldberger was a member of the first Jewish-Catholic interfaith dialogue, and was very active in both Jewish and non-Jewish community organizations. Rabbi Judah (Yehudah) Leib Ginsburg, 1931-1957

Abstract Rabbi Judah (Yehudah) Leib Ginsburg (1888-1945) was born in Dvinsk (Daugavpils), Latvia, and came to the United States to settle in New York in 1931. Ginsburg was married to Etta Ginsburg, and the couple had two children, Moisha and Yudis. He contracted tuberculosis in New York and traveled to Denver for treatment at the Jewish Consumptive's Relief Society, where he was admitted on February 3, 1932. Ginsburg's wife and children soon followed to Denver, where the family ultimately settled....

Rabbi Samuel Adelman, 1957-1968

Abstract

Rabbi Samuel Adelman (1916-1966) was the leader of Beth Ha Medrosh Hagodol (BMH) Synagogue from 1957 until his death in 1966. He was also the president of the Religious Council on Human Relations for Metropolitan Denver and the Denver Housing Board, and was well-known for his talks on Russian Jews. Adelman was buried at Mount Nebo Cemetery and an estimated 1,400 people attended memorial services at BMH.
